A conversation with Brian McConville CBE, Chairman of MJM Group

Brian founded MJM Marine in 1983 and has led it to become one of the world’s leading cruise line refit companies, based in Newry. He and his team have worked in partnership with the largest cruise line operators in the world on their rolling refurbishment programmes. 

Having Mivan and TopGlass, the MJM group continues to have ambitious growth plans from its base in Northern Ireland as we emerge from the Covid pandemic.

MJM Group

Brian McConville is the owner and Chair of MJM Group. MJM Group comprises of trading businesses- MJM Marine, Mivan and Topglass and is primarily engaged in the high-end marine and land-based construction sectors.

Brian started his joinery business in 1983 to provide refurbishment services to the Irish Sea ferry corridor. The Specialist Joinery division was established in 1990 to service the hotel & leisure industries and over the years, a growing portfolio of cruise ship fitouts. In 2009 the company started working in new custom-built facilities in Newry and in 2013 officially opened its 100,000ft2 manufacturing facility and office accommodation IN Newry, Northern Ireland.

Brian has taken MJM from humble beginnings to the MJM Marine of today, which is one of the world’s leading cruise line refit company. Brian and his team work in partnership with the largest cruise line operators in the world on their rolling refurbishment programmes. Much of this business is based on personal relationship management by Brian and his team.

Brian acquired the assets of Mivan, a leading specialist joinery business in 2014. Mivan has a longstanding reputation of working on some of the most exciting construction projects in the UK as well as marine outfitting projects. Brian purchased Topglass, based in Toomebridge in 2018. Topglass has been a specialist glass supplier to MJM and Mivan for many years and was a natural fit for the growing portfolio. Topglass is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Pilkington Profilit, amongst a host of other specialist glazing solutions.

Brian was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2021 New Year Honours List, recognising him for his services to both the economy and charity in Northern Ireland.
